Orthodox Western Saints for Today

Pre-Schism Saints of the Orthodox Roman Patriarchate*
6th October (23rd September O.S.):

  • ADOMNÁN (ADAMNÁN, ADAM, EUNAN), An Irish Abbot of Iona in Scotland — “a wise and good man, well versed in the Holy Scriptures” — best known by his Life of St. Columba (9th June), and ‘De Locis Sancris’, an account of a visit to the Holy Land by Arculf, a bishop from Gaul.   Visits to Wearmouth in A.D. 686 and A.D. 688 led him to accept the Roman practice for the calculation of Easter, though St. Bede the Venerable (25th May) states he was unable to persuade the monks of Iona and its dependencies to adopt it.   He went to Ireland in A.D. 692, where he was more successful in furthering the Roman practice.   He also proposed a law to protect non-combatants in war, first accepted at the Synod of Birr (A.D. 697), and thereafter periodically enforced as the ‘Law of Adomnán’.   St. Adomnán reposed circa A.D. 704.

  • ANDREW, JOHN, PETER, AND ANTONY, deported from Syracuse to North Africa by the Saracens, at that time masters of Sicily, where they were subjected to savage tortures and put to death, circa A.D. 900.
  • CISSA, (early eighth century), a disciple of St. Guthlac (11th April) at Crowland in England, of whom nothing further is known.
  • CONSTANTIUS, (sixth century), a Sacristan of the ancient church of St. Stephen in Ancona in the Marches.

  • LINUS, (On Eastern calendars 4th January, and 5th November), the first Pope of Rome, from A.D. 67 until his repose A.D. 79.   St. Linus was a disciple of the Apostle Paul, one of the Seventy, is mentioned in 2 Timothy 4:21, and is venerated as a martyr.

* - Prior to the Schism the Patriarchate of Rome was Orthodox and fully in communion with the Orthodox Church. As Saint John of Shanghai and San Francisco +1966 said "The West was Orthodox for a thousand years, and her venerable Liturgy is far older than any of her heresies."
