Orthodox Western Saints for Today

Pre-Schism Saints of the Orthodox Roman Patriarchate*
18th June, (5th June O.S.):

  • ADALAR (ADALHER), a companion of St. Boniface (vide infra) with whom he was martyred at Dokkum in Friesland A.D. 755.
  • BONIFACE, a native of England, who went to Germany as a missionary where he enlightened Bavaria, Hesse, Friesland, Thuringia and Franconia.   In 723 Pope Gregory II consecrated him bishop with full jurisdiction over the Germanies.   In 731 he became Metropolitan beyond the Rhine and in 747 Archbishop of Mainz.   He established many monasteries and convents (which he placed under the charge of English monks and nuns), including Fulda, where his relics are still venerated.   St. Boniface was martyred in his old age, with fifty-two companions, at Dokkum in Friesland (A.D. 755), and is known as the Apostle of Germany.
  • EOBAN, an Irishman who preached with SS. Willibrord (7th November) and Boniface (vide supra) in Friesland and Germany, and shared in the latter's martyrdom in Dokkum A.D. 755.
  • FELIX OF FRITZLAR, a monk at Fritzlar in Germany and a martyr, probably at the hands of heathen, circa A.D. 790.
  • FLORENTIUS, JULIAN, CYRIACUS, MARCELLINUS AND FAUSTINUS, martyrs who were beheaded in Perugia under Decius, A.D. 250.
  • MEINWERK, Bishop of Paderborn from A.D. 1009 until his repose A.D. 1036.   His considerable building programme resulted in him being called 'the bishop-builder'.
  • SANCHO (SANCTIUS, SANCIUS), a native of Albi who was taken to Cordoba as a prisoner of war, educated at the Moorish court, and then enrolled in the guards of the Emir.   He was martyred (A.D. 851) by impalement for his refusal to embrace Islam.
  • TUDNO, a sixth century Welsh Saint for whom Llandudno is named.
  • WACCAR, GUNDEKAR, ELLEHER, and HATHAWULF, monks who were martyred with St. Boniface (vide supra) at Dokkum, A.D. 754.

* - Prior to the Schism the Patriarchate of Rome was Orthodox and fully in communion with the Orthodox Church.   As Saint John of Shanghai and San Francisco +1966 said "The West was Orthodox for a thousand years, and her venerable Liturgy is far older than any of her heresies."
