Pre-Schism Saints of the Orthodox Roman Patriarchate*
5th May, (22nd April O.S.):

  • AGAPITUS I, (Also 20th September) Pope of Rome from May 535 until his repose (in Constantinople) in April 536. As Pope he was a strong opponent of Monophysitism. His relics were brought back to Rome on 20th September, when he was commemorated a second time.
  • ARWALD, two brothers who were sons of Arwald, a prince in the Isle of Wight, who were put to death by soldiers of King Ceadwalla, then a pagan, on the day after their baptism in 686. Their names are unknown, but they are collectively known as "St. Arwald" — after their pagan father (who died fighting Christianity).
  • EPIPODIUS AND ALEXANDER, two young friends in Lyons who were martyred under Marcus Aurelius in 178. St. Epipodius was beheaded. St. Alexander is also commemorated on 24th April.
  • GAIUS (CAIUS, CAIVS), (On Eastern Calendars 11th August) a native of Dalmatia who was the 28th Pope of Rome from December 283 until he was martyred with members of his family in April 296.
  • LEO OF SENS, the Bishop of Sens for twenty-three years until his repose in 541.
  • OPPORTUNA, the sister of St. Chrodegang (6th March), Bishop of Séez. While still quite young she became a nun at the convent of Monteuil, eventually becoming abbess there. She was described as 'a true mother to all her nuns', and reposed circa 770.
  • SENORINA, a relative of St. Rudesind of Mondoñedo (1st March) who was entrusted to the care of her aunt, Abbess Godina at the convent of St. John of Venaria (Vieyra), where she later served as abbess. In that capacity she moved the convent to Basto near Braga in Portugal. She reposed in 982.
  • SOTER, a Greek who was the 12th Pope of Rome (circa 166 - 174). He corresponded with the Church of Corinth and is traditionally regarded as a martyr.

* - Prior to the Schism the Patriarchate of Rome was Orthodox and fully in communion with the Orthodox Church. As Saint John of Shanghai and San Francisco +1966 said "The West was Orthodox for a thousand years, and her venerable Liturgy is far older than any of her heresies."
