Orthodox Western Saints for Today

Pre-Schism Saints of the Orthodox Roman Patriarchate*
16th May, (3rd May O.S.):

  • ADALSINDIS, a sister of St Waldalenus (15th May), founder of the monastery of Bèze in Burgundy.   She became abbess of a convent near Bèze, reposing circa 680.
  • ALDWYN, an eighth century abbot of Partney in Lincolnshire in England.
  • ALEXANDER I, (On Eastern Calendars 16th March.)   The fifth Pope of Rome from circa 107 until his repose circa 115.
  • ALEXANDER, EVENTIUS AND THEODULUS, three martyrs who are buried on the Via Nomentana in Rome — circa 113.
  • ANSFRIDUS, a Count of Brabant, who wishing to become a monk, built the convent of Thorn for his daughter and wife in 992.   Instead he was made Archbishop of Utrecht.   While Archbishop he founded the monastery of Hohorst (Heiligenberg) where he retired when stricken with blindness, and thus fulfilling his ambition of living as a monk. St. Ansfridus reposed at Hohorst in 1010.
  • ELWIN (ETHELWIN), (Eighth century.)   the second Bishop of Lindsey.   He was a close friend of St. Egbert (24th April), whom he accompanied to Ireland, and reposing there.
  • GLUVIAS (GLYWYS), (Sixth century.)   a brother of St. Cadoc (24th January) of Llancarfan in Wales, who went to Cornwall, where he founded a monastery.   There is a church in Cornwall is dedicated to him.
  • JUVENAL OF NARNI, the first Bishop of Narni. He reposed in 369.
  • PHILIP OF ZELL, an English pilgrim who settled as a hermit near Worms.   With several disciples, he founded the monastery of Zell — so called from his own original cell — which later grew into the town of Zell.   St. Philip reposed circa 770.
  • SCANNAL, Scannal of Cell-Coleraine in Ireland was a disciple of St. Columba (9th June), he reposed circa 563.

* - Prior to the Schism the Patriarchate of Rome was Orthodox and fully in communion with the Orthodox Church.     As Saint John of Shanghai and San Francisco +1966 said "The West was Orthodox for a thousand years, and her venerable Liturgy is far older than any of her heresies."
