Orthodox Western Saints for Today

Pre-Schism Saints of the Orthodox Roman Patriarchate*
12th May, (29th April O.S.):

  • AGAPIUS AND COMPANIONS, Agapius and Secundinus were either bishops or priests who were exiled to Cirta in Numidia in North Africa from their native Spain during the persecution under Valerian.   There they suffered martyrdom together with Tertulla and Antonia, virgins, and a certain woman with her twin children circa 259.
  • AVA (AVIA), a niece of King Pepin who was blind in her childhood and youth, however she was miraculously healed by St. Rainfrede (8th October).   She became a nun at Denain in Hainault, eventually becoming abbess, reposing circa 845.
  • DANIEL, a ninth century Saint from Asia Minor who became a hermit, and was martyred in Spain.
  • DICTINUS, (Fifth century) St. Patrick's (17th March) first convert in Ulster.
  • ENDELLION, a sixth century (?) Saint who was most likely born in Cornwall.   She was the sister of St. Nectan of Hartland (17th June), and a part of her shrine at St. Endellion in Cornwall is still extant.
  • FIACHAN (FIANCHINE), a seventh century Saint who was born in Munster in Ireland.   He became a monk at Lismore and was a disciple of St. Carthage the Younger (14th May).
  • PAULINUS OF BRESCIA, the Bishop of Brescia from circa 524 until his repose in 545.   His relics are enshrined in the church of San Pietro in Oliveto.
  • SENAN, a seventh century hermit in the north of Wales.
  • SEVERUS, a bishop of Naples in Italy and a famous wonderworker.   He raised a dead man to life so that he could bear witness in favour of his persecuted widow.   St. Severus reposed in 409.
  • TORPES, a martyr in Pisa under Nero circa 65.
  • WILFRID THE YOUNGER, a monk, favourite disciple of, and successor to St. John of Beverley (7th May).   Before his repose in 744, he lived at the monastery at Ripon.

* - Prior to the Schism the Patriarchate of Rome was Orthodox and fully in communion with the Orthodox Church. As Saint John of Shanghai and San Francisco +1966 said "The West was Orthodox for a thousand years, and her venerable Liturgy is far older than any of her heresies."
