Orthodox Western Saints for Today

Pre-Schism Saints of the Orthodox Roman Patriarchate*
9th March, (24th February O.S.):

  • BETTO,a monk at Sainte Colombe in Sens, who became Bishop of Auxerre in 889 and reposed in 918.
  • CUMINE THE WHITE, (also 6th October), an Irishman who became Abbot of Iona, wrote a life of St. Columba (9th June) and reposed in 669.
  • JOHN THE HARVESTER (THERISTOS), though his parents were originally from Calabria, he was born in Sicily, where his mother had been taken as a slave by the Saracens. He managed to escape to Calabria while still a child, becoming a monk. St. John reposed in 1129. Theristos, meaning harvester, refers to a miraculous harvest reaped by the saint.
  • LIUDHARD, the chaplain to, and bishop of, Queen Bertha of Kent. It is possible he played an important part in the conversion of King Ethelbert, preparing for the conversion of Kent. He reposed circa 600.
  • MODESTUS, the bishop of Trier from 486 until his repose in 489. His relics are venerated in the church of St. Matthias in Trier.
  • MONTANUS, LUCIUS, JULIAN, VICTORICUS, FLAVIAN AND COMPANIONS, a group of ten disciples of St Cyprian of Carthage, martyred under Valerian in 259. The story of their imprisonment was told by themselves and that of their martyrdom by eyewitnesses.
  • PRAETEXTATUS (PRIX), the bishop of Rouen from 550 to 586. For his courage in denouncing the wicked, he was cruelly persecuted and exiled. Recalled seven years later, he was martyred on Easter Sunday 586 in his own church.
  • PRIMITIVA (PRIMITIVUS), an early martyr, most likely in Rome.

* - Prior to the Schism the Patriarchate of Rome was Orthodox and fully in communion with the Orthodox Church. As Saint John of Shanghai and San Francisco +1966 said "The West was Orthodox for a thousand years, and her venerable Liturgy is far older than any of her heresies."
