Orthodox Western Saints for Today

Pre-Schism Saints of the Orthodox Roman Patriarchate*
24th March, (11th March O.S.):

  • ALBERTA, was one of the first victims of the persecution under Diocletian circa 286. She suffered in Agen in Aquitaine with St. Faith (6th October) and others.
  • ANGUS, known as 'the Culdee', he was a monk at Clonenagh in Ireland and then at Tallacht, and is remembered for his celebrated hymn to the saints, called Felire. From Tallacht he returned to Clonenagh where he became a bishop, reposing circa 830.
  • BENEDICT CRISPUS OF MILAN, the archbishop of Milan for forty-five years. He reposed in 725.
  • CANDIDUS, PIPERION AND COMPANIONS, a group of twenty-two martyrs who suffered in North Africa either in Carthage or Alexandria, most likely under Valerian and Gallienus circa 254-259.
  • CONSTANTINE, a confessor in Carthage in North Africa.
  • EULOGIUS OF CORDOBA, a prominent priest in Cordoba during the height of the Moorish persecution. Outstanding for his courage and learning, he encouraged the Orthodox in their sufferings and wrote a Memorial of the Saints for their benefit. He himself suffered martyrdom in 859, for protecting St. Leocritia (15th March), a young girl who converted from Islam.
  • FIRMIAN (FERMANUS, FIRMINUS), an abbot of San Sabino Piceno near Fermo, who reposed circa 1020.
  • HERACLIUS AND ZOSIMUS, martyrs in North Africa who suffered in Carthage under Valerian and Gallienus circa 263.
  • PETER THE SPANIARD, a pilgrim from Spain to Rome who settled as a hermit in Babuco near Veroli.
  • VIGILIUS, he succeeded St. Palladius (10th April) as Bishop of Auxerre, and by order of the mayor of the palace was murdered in a forest near Compiègne in 685.
  • VINDICIAN, a disciple of St. Eligius (1st December), who became Bishop of Arras-Cambrai, and bravely protested against the excesses of the Merovingian Kings and the all-powerful mayors of the palace. He reposed in 712.

* - Prior to the Schism the Patriarchate of Rome was Orthodox and fully in communion with the Orthodox Church. As Saint John of Shanghai and San Francisco +1966 said "The West was Orthodox for a thousand years, and her venerable Liturgy is far older than any of her heresies."
