Orthodox Western Saints for Today

Pre-Schism Saints of the Orthodox Roman Patriarchate*
17th March, (4th March O.S.):

  • ADRIAN AND COMPANIONS, a bishop on the Isle of May in the Firth of Forth in Scotland, who was martyred by the Danes, together with other monks circa 875.
  • APPIAN, a native of Liguria, who became a monk at the monastery of St. Peter of Ciel d'Oro in Pavia. He later became a hermit in Commacchio on the shores of the Adriatic, bringing Christ to that region, and reposing circa 800.
  • BASINUS, a monk and then abbot of St. Maximin in Trier, who succeeded St. Numerian (5th July) as bishop of that city. He reposed circa 705
  • FELIX OF RHUYS, born near Quimper in Brittany, he became a hermit on Ouessant, and then a monk at Fleury in Saint-Benoit-sur-Loire. He went on to restore the monastery of Rhuys, founded by St. Gildas (29th January), which had been destroyed by the Vikings. St. Felix reposed in 1038.
  • LEONARD OF AVRANCHES, after a misspent youth, he converted (largely by the prayers of his mother), and was elected Bishop of Avranches. St. Leonard reposed circa 614
  • LUCIUS I, after succeeding St. Cornelius (16th September) as Pope of Rome in 253, he was immediately sent into exile. St. Lucius reposed in 254 and was referred to as a martyr by St Cyprian.
  • MARTYRS OF ROME, a group of nine hundred martyrs (circa 260) buried in the catacombs of Callistus on the Appian Way in Rome.
  • OWEN (OWIN), after working as a steward in the household of St. Audrey (Etheldred) (23rd June), he became a monk at Lastingham in England with St. Chad (2nd March). When the latter became Bishop of Mercia, he settled St. Owen with other monks at a monastery near Lichfield. St. Owen reposed circa 680.

* - Prior to the Schism the Patriarchate of Rome was Orthodox and fully in communion with the Orthodox Church. As Saint John of Shanghai and San Francisco +1966 said "The West was Orthodox for a thousand years, and her venerable Liturgy is far older than any of her heresies."
