Orthodox Western Saints for Today

Pre-Schism Saints of the Orthodox Roman Patriarchate*
13th March, (28th February O.S.):

  • HILARY (HILARUS), a native of Sardinia who was Pope of Rome from 461 until his repose in 468, and worked energetically against Nestorianism and Eutychianism, he also consolidated the Church.
  • LLIBIO, a sixth century Welsh saint and patron of Llanlibio in Anglesey.
  • MACARIUS, RUFINUS, JUSTUS AND THEOPHILUS, potters by trade, who were martyred under Decius circa 250, perhaps in Rome, and were venerated in Bari and Bologna.
  • MAIDOC (MADOC), a sixth century bishop, for whom Llanmadog in Wales was named.
  • OSWALD, the nephew of St. Oda of Canterbury (2nd January), he went to Fleury to learn from monastic life and later became Bishop of Worcester (961). He was supportive of St. Dunstan (19th May) and St. Ethelwold (1st August) in their efforts to revive monastic life in England. St. Oswald founded monasteries at Ramsey and at Worcester, and in 972 he became Archbishop of York. He reposed on his knees in 992, after washing the feet of twelve poor people, as was his daily practice.
  • ROMANUS OF CONDAT, at the age of thirty-five he went to live as a hermit in the Jura mountains, where he was followed by his brother St. Lupicinus (21st March). Soon many disciples gathered round, and the brothers then founded the monasteries of Condat (later known as Saint-Oyend), and Leuconne, which they ruled together, as well as the convent of La Beaume (later called St-Romain-de-la-Roche) where their sister was abbess. St. Romanus of Condat reposed circa 460.
  • RUELLINUS (RUELLIN), the sixth century successor of St. Tudwal (30th November) as Bishop of Tréguier in Brittany.
  • SILLAN (SILVANUS), a disciple of St. Comgall (10th May) at Bangor in Co. Down in Ireland, and his second successor as abbot. He reposed circa 610.

* - Prior to the Schism the Patriarchate of Rome was Orthodox and fully in communion with the Orthodox Church. As Saint John of Shanghai and San Francisco +1966 said "The West was Orthodox for a thousand years, and her venerable Liturgy is far older than any of her heresies."
