Orthodox Western Saints for Today

Pre-Schism Saints of the Orthodox Roman Patriarchate*
3 December (20 November O.S.):

  • AMPELUS AND GAIUS, martyrs in Messina in Sicily under Diocletian circa A.D. 302.
  • AUTBODUS, an Irishman who preached in Artois, Hainault and Picardy.   He reposed as a hermit near Laon in A.D. 690.
  • BENIGNUS, little is known of this saint's life, save that he was Archbishop of Milan from A.D. 465 until his repose circa A.D. 477.
  • BERNWARD (BERWARD), Bishop of Hildesheim from A.D. 993 until his repose in A.D. 1022.   St. Bernward was an excellent architect, painter, sculptor, decorator and metalsmith, and also served as a tutor of the half-Greek Emperor Otto III.

  • EDMUND, King of East Anglia and first patron-saint of England.   he was taken prisoner by the heathen Danes and savagely martyred at Hoxne in Suffolk, dying with the name of Jesus on his lips (A.D. 869).   Bury St. Edmunds in Suffolk was named after him.
  • EUDO (EUDON, EUDES ODO), a monk at Lérins, who founded the monastery of Corméry-en-Velay (Charmillac, later called Saint-Chaffre).   St. Eudo reposed circa A.D. 760.
  • EVAL (UVOL, URFOL), (sixth century), a bishop in Cornwall, where there is a village called after him.
  • LEO OF NONANTULA, an Abbot of the monastery of Nonantula near Modena in the Emilia-Romagna region of present-day Italy, who reposed in A.D. 1000.
  • MAXENTIA, (date unknown), an Irish woman who became an anchoress near Senlis in Picardie, where she was put to death at the place now called Pont-Sainte-Maxence.
  • OCTAVIUS, SOLUTOR AND ADVENTOR, Patron-saints of Turin, where they were martyred in A.D. 297.
  • SILVESTER, bishop of Châlons-sur-Saône from circa A.D. 484 until his repose circa A.D. 525.   He was described as 'the glory of confessors' by St. Gregory of Tours (17th November).
  • SIMPLICIUS OF VERONA, a bishop of Verona who reposed circa A.D. 535.

* - Prior to the Schism the Patriarchate of Rome was Orthodox and fully in communion with the Orthodox Church. As Saint John of Shanghai and San Francisco +1966 said "The West was Orthodox for a thousand years, and her venerable Liturgy is far older than any of her heresies."
