Orthodox Western Saints for Today

Pre-Schism Saints of the Orthodox Roman Patriarchate*
16th December (3rd December O.S.):

  • ABBO, an Abbot of St. Germain in Auxerre in France. He became Bishop of Auxerre in 857 and reposed circa 860.
  • AGRICOLA, a martyr in Pannonia.
  • ATTALIA (ATTALA), a niece of St. Odilia (13th December), who was a nun and later Abbess of St Stephen's in Strasbourg, reposing in 741.
  • BIRINUS, originally from Lombardy, he was consecrated Bishop in Genoa and sent to England. There he converted Cynegils, King of Wessex, and was given Dorchester in Oxfordshire as his see. He is known as the 'Apostle of Wessex'. He reposed circa 650.
  • CASSIAN, was a court recorder who was taking down the Acts of the proceedings at the trial of St Marcellus (30th October) at Tangier. Indignant at the injustice done to the martyr, he threw down his pen and declared himself to be Orthodox. He was arrested and a few weeks later he too suffered martyrdom in 298.
  • ELOQUIUS (ELOQUE), a disciple and successor of St. Fursey (16th January) as Abbot of Lagny. He reposed circa 660.
  • ETHERNAN, consecrated bishop in Ireland, he returned to his native Scotland to preach the Gospel.
  • LUCIUS, a British noble who is traditionally believed to have requested that missionaries be sent to Britain where they founded the dioceses of London and Llandaff.
  • MIROCLES, an Archbishop of Milan who helped develop the Ambrosian liturgy and church singing. He reposed in 318.
  • SOLA (SOL, SOLUS, SUOLO), an English priest-monk who followed St. Boniface (5th June) to Germany where he lived as a hermit first near Fulda later near Eichstätt, finally settling on a piece of land where he founded the monastery called Solnhofen as a dependency of Fulda. He reposed in 794.

* - Prior to the Schism the Patriarchate of Rome was Orthodox and fully in communion with the Orthodox Church. As Saint John of Shanghai and San Francisco +1966 said "The West was Orthodox for a thousand years, and her venerable Liturgy is far older than any of her heresies."
