Orthodox Western Saints for Today

Pre-Schism Saints of the Orthodox Roman Patriarchate*
12 December (29 November O.S.):

  • BLAISE AND DEMETRIUS, (date unknown), martyrs in Veroli in Lazio.
  • BRENDAN OF BIRR, founder monastery of Birr in Offaly in Ireland.   He was a contemporary of St. Brendan the Voyager (16th May), a disciple of St. Finian at Clonard (12th December), as well as a friend and advisor of St. Columba (9th June), who saw the soul of St. Brendan carried by angels to heaven at the moment of his repose circa A.D. 573.
  • EGELWINE (ETHELWINE, AYLWINE), (seventh century), a prince of the house of Wessex, who lived as a hermit at Athelney in Somerset.
  • GULSTAN (GUSTAN, CONSTANS), a monk at St. Gildas of Rhuys (29th January) in Brittany who reposed circa A.D. 1010.
  • HARDOIN, (seventh century), a Bishop of St Pol-de-Léon in Brittany.
  • ILLUMINATA, a virgin in Todi who reposed circa A.D. 320.
  • RADBOD, the Bishop of Utrecht from A.D. 900 until his repose in A.D. 918.
  • SADWRN (SADWEN), brother of St. Illtyd (6th November) and disciple of St. Cadfan (1st November), and patron of a number of churches in Wales.
  • SATURNINUS (SERNIN), a missionary who enlightened the area around Pampeluna (Pamplona) in Navarre, and then Toulouse and environs.   St. Saturninus is venerated as the first Bishop of Toulouse, and it is generally thought he was martyred in the persecution of Valerian by being fastened to a wild bull which dragged him about until he was torn to pieces circa A.D. 257.
  • SATURNINUS AND SISINIUS, St. Saturninus is thought to have been a native of Carthage who served as a priest in Rome.   He and his deacon Sisinius were sentenced to hard labour and subsequently martyred probably circa A.D. 309.   They were buried in the cemetery of St. Thraso on the Salarian Way.
  • WALDERIC, the founder of the monastery of Murrhardt who reposed circa A.D. 817.

* - Prior to the Schism the Patriarchate of Rome was Orthodox and fully in communion with the Orthodox Church. As Saint John of Shanghai and San Francisco +1966 said "The West was Orthodox for a thousand years, and her venerable Liturgy is far older than any of her heresies."
