Orthodox Western Saints for Today

Pre-Schism Saints of the Orthodox Roman Patriarchate*
18 November (5 November O.S.):

  • AUGUSTINE AND PAULINUS, (sixth century), generally thought to have been monks sent by St. Benedict (11th July) to found the monastery of Terracina in present-day Italy.
  • BERTILLA, a nun at Jouarre near Meaux.   She served as the first Abbess of Chelles from its re-founding until her repose circa A.D. 705.   During her tenure the convent flourished.
  • DOMINATOR, the fourteenth Bishop of Brescia in Lombardy, he reposed circa A.D. 495.
  • DOMNINUS, (fourth century), the first Bishop of Grenoble.
  • FELIX AND EUSEBIUS, (first century), martyrs in Terracina, a town approximately 56 km south east of Rome on the Via Appia.
  • FIBITIUS, abbot of a monastery in Trier, as well as the twenty-first Bishop of that city.   He reposed circa A.D. 500.
  • HERMENEGILD, a monk at Salcedo in Galicia who reposed in A.D. 586.
  • KANTEN (CANNEN), (eighth century), the founder of Lianganten in Powys in Wales.
  • KEA (KAY, KENAN), (sixth century), the saint who gave his name to Landkey in Devon.   He also spent some time in Brittany where he is venerated as St. Quay.
  • LAETUS, he became a monk at the age of twelve, and is honoured near Orléans.   He reposed in A.D. 533 and his relics enshrined in the village of St Lié.
  • LINUS, (also 23rd September) and on Eastern calendars (4th January), the first Pope of Rome from A.D. 67 until his repose in A.D. 79.   He was disciple of the Apostle Paul, one of the Seventy, is mentioned in II Timothy 4:21, and is venerated as a martyr.
  • MAGNUS, Archbishop of Milan from A.D. 520 until his repose in A.D. 525.
  • SPINULUS (SPINULA, SPIN), a monk at Moyenmoutier with St. Hidulf (11th July).   He went on to found the monastery of Bégon-Celle (now Saint-Blasien), and reposed in either A.D. 707 or A.D. 720.

* - Prior to the Schism the Patriarchate of Rome was Orthodox and fully in communion with the Orthodox Church. As Saint John of Shanghai and San Francisco +1966 said "The West was Orthodox for a thousand years, and her venerable Liturgy is far older than any of her heresies."
